Performances
Renowned Choreographer and Dancer Priya Shrikumar explores the interaction between the voices and the body of the performers, responding to both music and silence. Crossing the boundaries between traditional and contemporary Indian dance, Silent Space examines the infinite capacity of the human being to imagine, dream, play and improve on our physical and spiritual conditions.
Memorable performances
"Silent Space "challenged ideas about Indian classical dance, creating innovative contemporary work. This unforgettable spectacle featured evocative rhythms, precision, and striking geometry. It mixes western orchestral recordings, live singing, amplified flute, electronic drone, and the dancers' foot-stomping percussion.
"Dansa Rickshaw" is a direct expression of choreographer Priya Shrikumar's dual heritage. The show creates a cultural dialogue by weaving together the intricate footwork and expressive storytelling of Bharatanatyam with the powerful sounds of Scottish bagpipes and traditional reels.
The production also pays homage to the late Scottish musician Martyn Bennett, known for his pioneering fusion of traditional Scottish music with contemporary beats. This choice underscores the theme of blending ancient traditions with modern innovation.
"The Scotsman praised the dancers impressive technical skill, including intricate footwork, jumps, and balances. The review noted that the performance gained energy as it progressed, with lighting matching the vibrancy of the costumes and the introduction of kilts alongside traditional Indian dance attire.
