Classes

DanceIhayami continues the long established teaching activities, workshops, education and outreach programmes originally started by Priya. DanceIhayami positively welcomes children and adults of all abilities and provides additional support for "Learning and Personal Achievements".

Dance Ihayami currently offers classes in music, dance and martial arts (see below). Dance Ihayami has introduced a referral scheme. If you bring a new person to join a class, both you and your friend will get that class free of charge.

Bharatanatyam is a form of dance that finds its origins in southern India. Bharata Natyam is a harmonious blend of expressions (Bhava), melody (Raga) and rhythm (Thala); Natyam meaning Dance. In Bharatanatyam, the dancer is the story teller and the language is of hand gestures and facial expressions.

Kerala Nadanam was developed from Kathakali with its own basic exercises, and is a strong and expressive dance form. It helps to build agility, precision, rhythm and is an excellent way to keep fit while learning a beautiful dance sequence. This dance form is also highly expressive in terms of its story telling content.

Kalaripayattu is the oldest existing martial art form, dating back more than 2000 years and said to be the forerunner of popularly known Chinese martial arts, as the Buddhist monk Bodhidharma took this knowledge from India to China. Crafted in ancient South India, it draws inspiration from the raw power and sinuous strength of the majestic animal forms - Lion, Tiger, Elephant, Wild Boar, Snake, and Crocodile.

The Mrudangam is the primary concert drum of the South Indian tradition. It is a wooden double-headed barrel drum with two skins on the left head and three on the right.
